University of Saskatchewan
Chantel Chizen is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Soil Science at the University of Saskatchewan. She specializes in the areas of soil carbon management and digital soil mapping, as well as soil science education and extension. Her research focuses on measuring how soil carbon storage varies across prairie pothole wetlands in agricultural landscapes, with an expected completion of her PhD program in December 2024. The impact of this research is relevant for land management, environmental carbon credit programs, and wetland policy development in Saskatchewan. She is actively involved in communicating soil science research to the public and policymakers at the local, national, and international level. Chantel is a Foundation for Food and Agricultural Fellow (2021-2024 cohort) where she has completed training and experiences in industry engagement and science policy. Most recently she was awarded a Carbon Sequestration Fellowship from the Bezos Earth Fund to conduct short-term research on monitoring soil carbon for voluntary carbon markets at the Alliance Bioversity International & CIAT in Colombia.
